Summer Term 2018 - 19

I hope you have all had a good Easter and feel ready for the new term.

Below is some information that might be useful as we start the new term:

PE: This half term our PE lessons will take place on Mondays and / or Tuesdays. Children should have both indoor and outdoor PE kit on these days.

Homework: In addition to ongoing, regular reading and times table practice, as a general rule, homework will be set on a Thursday or Friday to be returned by the following Wednesday. It will usually consist of a maths task, an English task and one other piece of work. From time to time this may vary so please do check your children’s bags.

Homework is a valuable opportunity to give you an insight into what we are covering in class and gives your child chance to review and revise what they have learnt at their own pace. Importantly, it provides your child with the opportunity to take some responsibility for organising their time and learning and to develop independence. I encourage the children to look at their homework as soon after it is set as possible. This gives them chance to ask for support in school if necessary and minimises the likelihood of last minute stress at home!

Music: Love Music Trust music lessons will continue with our specialist music tutor on Thursday afternoons. Please help your child to remember their instrument on Thursday mornings as we do not usually have spares in school. In order for your child to make the most of this great opportunity, please encourage them to practise for 10 or 15 minutes a few times during the week. This is particularly important now as we are brginning to prepare for the Come and Play with the Halle event in June. Look out for further details coming soon.

English: In English this half term we will be studying Traditional Tales.

Maths: During this half term we will be focussing on area and volume; fractions, decimals and percentages, and money. Children in year 5 are expected to work fluently with 6 and 7 digit numbers! We will also continue to focus on times tables – look out for the tasks and activities in the homework books.

Times Tables: This year, for the first time, Year 4 children will sit a trial external times table check. The check will take the form of an online assessment in the summer term and will prepare us for statutory testing in Summer 2020 (current Y3). Fluency in times tables is already an important part of our maths curriculum and we will continue to work hard to ensure that your children are well prepared and confident in this area in advance of the check. Please look out for resources and activities in their homework books to support this.

Science: We continue with our topic on Life Cycles this half term.
